SPOTSYLVANIA HISTORICAL ASSOCIATION

When a member of the Spotsylvania Historical Association approached me, asking for my help to kickstart their marketing and branding overhaul I was very excited to jump on the opportunity. Being a native of the Spotsylvania area, I was honored to be a part of giving back to the county, and to have the chance to make a mark on the region where I grew up. The local museum had a desire to create a brand that really captured the essence of the history that had taken part in the area, and this project was an opportunity to showcase the rich heritage of all that Spotsylvania has to offer. The system I developed centered around the courthouse mark, which is ringed with the 13 stars of the original colonies, representing the fact that the county has been in existence since before America’s inception. The crossed rifles reflect the infamous battles of the Civil War that raged through the region, and the typefaces chosen pay homage to the history of the county.

One of the main goals in rebranding the county museum was to help boost their sales in merchandise and raise awareness of the historical association. To this end, I wanted the design system to be something that people would take pride in displaying. The idea was to create a design that was elegant, but also down to earth and a system that would reflect the culture of this historical, rural county in central Virginia.

One of the other aspects of this brand included developing elegant advertisement designs for county events, such as the “Evening with the General” dinner, where attendees can come and spend the night enjoying a catered meal while experiencing one of the nation’s premiere General Washington re-enactors. Or events such as “Kids Dig Spotsylvania”, where children can attend a week long summer camp and experience an archaeological dig while learning about the history of the county from local museum staff.
